Southern West Virginia | Vacation Ideas |
Southern West Virginia is worlds away from
the ordinary with outstanding wilderness scenery, beautiful rivers,
friendly people and a variety of things to do like hiking,
fishing, climbing,
biking and horseback
riding offering adventures for everyone. And it's closer than
you think! Over 60% of the US population is less than a day's drive
away.
With
more than 200 miles of America's Best Whitewater the
New and Gauley Rivers are known and
revered the world over.
New River
More than 150,000 people raft the New each
year as it follows its age-old channel through the spectacular New
River Gorge.
The New River Gorge National River is the second oldest watershed in the world! A trip down the New is a trip back in time with historical coal towns and mines dotting the landscape telling stories of a bygone era. It was designated as a national River in 1978 and as one of 14 American Heritage Rivers in 1988.
Gauley River
The Gauley River draws about 60,000 experienced
rafters each year. Most come during the world-famous Gauley Season,
which lasts for six weeks each fall. The Upper section demands constant
attention from the time you step into the raft with five major Class
V drops and more than 40 rapids to make for a super intense whitewater
challenge. While the Lower section is undoubtedly more civil, it
is certainly not a pushover boasting over 45 rapids ranging up to
Class V.
Other Rivers Other whitewater
rivers offering commercial rafting are the Cheat, Shenandoah, and Tygart. The Cheat River is located in north central part of the state and features a variety of world class whitewater action. At peak spring water levels the Cheat Canyon features exciting class IV-V rapids while warmer summer months provide a relaxing river experience on the Cheat Narrows. The Shenandoah River located in the Eastern Panhandle, offers a beautiful setting for exceptional family adventures through Harpers Ferry National Park only one hour from Washington, DC and Baltomore. The Tygart River is a lesser known waterway featuring a wide range of rapids with incredible scenic views.
