Choosing An Outfitter

Choosing a river outfitter can be a daunting task if you are unfamiliar with the rafting industry. Consider the following guidelines when planning your next whitewater adventure: Experience, Safety, Trips, Guest Services, Facilities, and Cost vs. Value.

Experience
west virginia rafting Nothing can be substituted for experience. Whether planning a short getaway weekend or an extended vacation, consider how long your outfitters of choice has been in the adventure business before investing your confidence, valuable time and money. At the end of the day you want to take away indelible memories of fun, laughter and exciting adventure with your family and friends.

Verify that your chosen outfitter has a current operating license and is an active member of WVPRO. Narrow your outfitter search by selecting one with many years of experience not only in running rivers but in delivering a hassle-free trip from arrival to departure. Ask about guide training and qualifications, the condition and maintenance of shuttle vehicles, rafts, paddles, life jackets, availability of wetsuits and booties, logistics with arrival and departure, etc. Ultimately your outfitter's experience will mold the experience you take home.

Safety
Assuming the role of 'Trip Organizer' can be a daunting task and invariably brings with it a feeling of responsibility for the welfare of those in the group. To alleviate concerns and put everyone at ease, make sure to do your homework and ask questions. Safety goes hand-in-hand with experience and although no outfitter can guarantee anyone's safety on the river, a careful examination of past performance and everyday practices can be a good indicator of reliability. Consider the following:

  •  Company Safety Policies
  •  Guide Training (Rapid Running, CPR and First Aid)
  •  Emergency Evacuation Procedures (Contingency plans)
  •  Accessibility of Communication Devices on the River (Two-Way Radios, Other)

There are things you can do to enhance your safety on the river as well by taking the following precautionary measures:

  •  Be in shape for the trip
  •  Do not consume alcohol and drugs prior to your trip. (It  is illegal and you will not be permitted to go on the  river otherwise)
  •  Make your Trip Leader aware of any medical conditions  you may have (pregnancy, heart related, asthma, bee
stings, etc.) and bring necessary medications with you.

Trips & Packages
The New and Gauley Rivers offer a variety of adventure options from overnight floats to fishing excursions to extreme whitewater trips, so make sure to get a good fit by researching all the available options. Ask yourself some questions in the process. Are you staying for one day or many? What kind of experience do you want - a white-knuckle ride, scenery and nature, a fun adventure with friends? Do you want to be pampered or be an active participant? What are your priorities?

Then find out some things from the outfitter. Do they bundle lodging and food to offer a better value? Are there other activities offered for combination trips? When is the optimal time to go? What are their contingency plans if water levels rise unexpectedly? Are there alternative river craft options (smaller boats, duckies, etc)? What are you expected to do on the trip? What are the minimum age requirements? What about accommodating physical disabilities?

Do your homework. You'll feel more confident going in and more relaxed while on vacation if you know what to expect. And hey - that's what vacation is all about, isn't it?

Guest Service
Let's face it. When you're on vacation you want to be taken care of and receive a little special attention. It's your vacation after all. Is your outfitter dedicated to the quality of your experience and your satisfaction? Are the guides dedicated professionals who work in the industry year after year? Does the staff seem eager to assist you with planning your vacation? Do they go the extra mile to customize your itinerary? Choose an outfitter that is committed to providing quality whitewater trips and making sure their guests walk away with a fulfilling experience.

There is a wide array of choices in outfitters when it comes to facilities ranging from basic outposts to elaborate adventure centers. Decide what kind of experience you want. Are you looking for a trip with all the amenities from gourmet restaurants to pristine bath houses? Or would you prefer to rough it with a pig roast, outdoor camping and a shower room? Is there entertainment in the evenings? What about a store for last-minute items? You could be spending a lot of time in one place so make sure to have the things that will make you comfortable during your stay.

Cost vs. Value
Make sure you understand exactly what's included in the price of your trip. Expect to pay an initial deposit and the balance a few weeks before your trip date. Ask about group discounts if applicable, and always ask whether your deposit is refundable should you (or your outfitter) cancel. Do they offer packages that bundle food and lodging for a better value?

West Virginia is blessed with some of the finest outfitters in the world on some of the best resources in the world, the New and Gauley. Each outfitter has its own unique style and personality. No matter which company you choose for your next whitewater vacation, just make sure you are prepared for the time of your life.
