The National Park Service has opened a new state of the art visitor center. The Sandstone Visitor Center, located just off Interstate 64 at the Sandstone exit, east of Beckley, represents a commitment to environmental sustainability.

The center use 60% less energy than the industry standard, is south-facing allowing for optimal use of natural lighting and heating by the winter sun, has interior lighting that is augmented by sunlight: sensors dim interior lights on bright, sunny days to reduce the amount of electricity used, and a light-colored roof that reflects sunlight, reducing the need to cool hot air during summer months.

Like its counterpart to the north, the Canyon Rim Visitor Center, Sandstone is located on a major travel route, maximizing opportunities for National Park Service staff to serve the public. Educational exhibits emphasize ways that everyone can lessen impacts on the environment. One important focus is on the need for communities within a watershed to work together. And the floor of the main exhibit hall features a unique map of the entire New River watershed! For more information visit: www.nps.gov/neri/home.htm
