The New River Gorge National River, the second oldest watershed in the world, has 52 Natioanl Park Service protected river miles. A trip down the New is a trip back in time, not just geologically but also historically, as the New River Gorge National River has only recently begun to hide the infrastructures of 1800's coal towns and mines. Designated as a National River in 1978 and as one of 14 American Heritage Rivers in 1988.
The Gauley River National Recreation Area, much younger geologically than the New, with 25 miles of Natioanl Park Service protected river miles brings undeveloped lands and remote big whitewater. Ranked number seven in the world, the Gauley draws whitewater enthusiasts from around the world for its traditional fall draw down from Summersville Lake Dam. The Gauley was designated as a National Recreation Area in 1988.
The Cheat River, this north central West Virginia watershed features a variety of world class rafting action. At peak spring water levels the Cheat Canyon features exciting class IV-V rapids while warmer summer months provide a relaxing rafting experience on the Cheat Narrows.
The Shenandoah River, located in the Eastern Panhandle, offers a beautiful setting for exceptional family river adventures through Harpers Ferry National Park only one hour from Washington, DC and Baltimore.
