The New River Gorge Bridge Day
The annual "Bridge Day" celebration held the third Saturday in October, commemorates the October 1977 completion of the longest single span bridge in the country. This event alone draws over 100,000 visitors.

Encompassing over 2,100 acres of rugged, heavily forested, mountainous terrain, Bluestone State Park provides a wide variety of water-oriented activities for guests and residents of southern West Virginia. In the midst of this wilderness park, just five miles south of Hinton, are nestled modern cabins, a campground and fine recreational facilites. The extra plus is that Bluestone is adjacent to Bluestone Lake, the state's third largest body of water.

Bluestone Dam spans the New River, forming Bluestone Lake, the third largest lake in West Virginia. With a 2,040-acre surface area, the lake provides boaters, water skiers, and fishermen with great recreational opportunities. The State of West Virginia operates Bluestone State Park with cabin rentals, picnicking and camping facilities. Also, a swimming pool, gift shop, two boat ramps, and a marina are operated for the convience of the visitors. Camping opportunities are also available at the state's Bluestone Lake Wildlife Management Area.
Summersville Lake

Summersville Lake is located near the town of Summersville in
Nicholas County, West Virginia. With nearly 2,800 acres and
60 miles of shoreline, it is West Virginia's largest lake. The
lake boasts exceptional water clarity and a scenic contrast
of terrain ranging from rolling hills to vertical rock cliffs.
Water releases from Summersville Dam create world class rafting
through the Gauley River National Recreation Area. Nearly one
million visitors are attracted to Summersville Lake annually
for exceptional boating, rock climbing, camping, picnicking,
hunting, fishing, scuba diving, and hiking opportunities.
NATIONAL PARK SERVICE RIVERS
New River Gorge National River

A rugged, white water river, flowing northward through deep canyons, the New River is among the oldest rivers on the continent. Located in southern West Virginia, New River Gorge National River was established in 1978 to preserve and protect 53 miles of the New River as a free-flowing waterway. This unit of the National Park System encompasses over 70,000 acres of land along the New River between the towns of Hinton and Fayetteville. The park and the surrounding area are rich in cultural and natural history, and contain an abundance of scenic and recreational opportunities.
Gauley River National Recreation Area

The 25 miles of free-flowing Gauley River and the six miles
of the Meadow River pass through scenic gorges and valleys containing
a wide variety of natural and cultural features. The Gauley
River contains several class V+ rapids, making it one of the
most adventurous white water boating rivers in the east.
Bluestone National Scenic River

This scenic river preserves relatively unspoiled land in southern West Virginia and contains natural and historic features of the Appalachian plateau. In its 11 miles, the lower Bluestone River offers excellent warm water fishing, hiking, boating, and scenery.
